How Plumbers Clear Clogs in Your Pipes

A clog in a pipe is a pretty common occurrence in a household. Typically, a clog is created when something that should not go down a drain does indeed go down a drain. This can be a one-time event such as a child flushing a toy; alternately, it can be due to attrition. For example, if you flush wet wipes down the toilet or pour grease in the sink repeatedly, it an eventually build up to a clog. The way to clear the clog depends on the nature of the clog and the position.

Snake

A drain snake is a simple tool. It is a flexible tool with a sharp point that can be fed into the pipe. Often they end in a grabber of some sort or a corkscrew. When the snake encounters the clog, the snake can grab the obstruction or be screwed into it. Then, the plumber can simply pull it out. This works well for bundles of hair, tissue, or other solid objects. Liquid rooters are more effective for less substantial clogs.

Liquid Rooter

If your clog is the result of  buildup of fat or hair, it can often be cleared with a liquid rooter. Plumbers have different recommendations for types of liquid rooters because they are designed to dissolve foreign substances. If you use the wrong one, it could dissolve parts of your plumbing. Certain liquids might corrode your metal pipes; others might simply break down rubber grommets or gaskets. Make sure you consult with a plumber before using a certain kind of rooter.

Water Jets

Water jetting is a more drastic way to clear a clog. Oftentimes, it is used if the clog is further down in the pipes and not easily accessible with a snake. The water jet is exactly what it sounds like; plumbers will spray high pressure water into the pipe. The force of the water will dislodge a foreign object or even break up something like a bundle of wet wipes. That can force the clog into larger pipes where it can be carried away. Water jetting isn’t appropriate for every kind of clog. In some cases, it can just push the clog further into the pipes and clog up your entire drainage system. In that case, the yard will need to be trenched.

Trenching

Trenching a yard involves digging up the pipes where they are in the backyard. Typically, a plumber will run a camera through the pipes until they find the clog; therefore, they can trench as little of your yard as possible. This is the most drastic process. That’s why it’s important to call a plumber as soon as you experience a clog. Some plumbers are fortunate enough to have trenchless water line repair equipment that keeps the invasive work to a minimum! Ask your plumber before moving forward to see if they have this game-changing service available.
